ZRMANJA STONEHOUSE
Built more than a century ago, this stone house has been preserved in its original form, maintaining the architectural character of the karst landscape of northern Dalmatia.

Located in the center of Obrovac, the only town on the Zrmanja River, the reconstruction follows a deliberately restrained approach. The intervention relies on the qualities already present in the existing structure, introducing only a limited number of new elements. Materials, colors, and interior details draw from the river and the surrounding landscape, reinforcing the character of the house rather than redefining it.

The house is organized on two independent levels. The lower floor opens onto an intimate courtyard, extending the living space outdoors, while the upper level occupies a single open-volume room overlooking the rooftops of the old town.

The project reveals the enduring qualities of a modest stone dwelling and its relationship to the landscape that shaped it, offering a point of departure for experiencing the distinctive natural and cultural heritage of the Zrmanja valley, a territory that remains largely untouched by contemporary tourism.
